The Kings Knights will open their 2010 soccer season two days later than expected. The opener was set for Tuesday, August 24, but due to some miscommunication between the schools, the match is set for Thursday, August 26 at Kolping Fields. Match times are set for 5:30 and 7:15 PM. The Knights are coming off a 5-6-5 season in 2009 and are faced with replacing nine seniors, but there are still plenty of familiar and experienced players who will line up for the Knights.
Mikey Roat returns as a senior and three year varsity starter. Other experienced returning players include Brandon Byrd and Eric Barnes playing the striker positions, Max Burkert, Leo Mesones and Garrett Householder holding down the midfield spots and Micahel Kettler and Sam Fadayel playing on the back line.
Contributions will be needed early and often throughout the season from a handful of young players, including freshman Garrett Irwin, sophomores Alex Kowal, Kyle Hoover, Patrick Finn, Luke McLelland and Brandon Coughlin. Also, juniors Nathan Meyer and Malik Gitau will be counted on for playing time. Senior Lucas Abraao is back after a one year break and will be needed as a goal scorer from the stiker position.
Steve Michalak and Sean Burke are slated for duty at the goal keeper spot. Neither has varsity experience and their collective success would seem to be one of the keys for Coach Poggi’s team to compete for an FAVC championship.
Kings faced LaSalle twice last year, winning the regular season game and losing in the first round of the sectional playoffs.
